Chinese New Year Celebration

Chinese New Year Celebration

In Chinese culture, the Rabbit is a symbol of longevity, peace and prosperity. On the 31st of January 2023, SJIS hosted a Chinese New Year dinner to usher in this auspicious new year of the Rabbit. The occasion was also graced by the presence of our eminent guests Y.M. Tunku Dato’ Yaacob Khyra, Chairman of Board of Governors, Ms. Anne Rajasaikaran, CEO of Edumaax Education Group, Y.M. Tunku Dato’ Ahmad Burhanuddin, and Heads of Department.

For the wonderful occasion, the main hall of our school was decorated in prosperous reds and golds, with Chinese New Year greetings hanging on the walls and doors to produce an atmosphere of festivity and jubilee. The evening’s events began with the lively and energetic Lion Dance, which captivated the audience with its charming prancing and tossing of mandarin oranges.

After the heart-pounding Lion Dance performance, the CEO of Edumaax, Ms. Anne Rajasaikaran, gave a stirring welcome speech before announcing that dinner was served. Of course, a Chinese New Year dinner is never complete without the “Yee Sang” toss!

Guests had a grand time tossing the Yee Sang with their chopsticks and exchanging well-wishes with shouts of “Lou Hei!”.

During dinner, the guests were entertained by our very own talented students, who performed traditional Chinese New Year songs, as well as modern rap and breakdancing. We were also very fortunate to be serenaded by the school principal, Ms. Catherine’s melodious voice as she sang a sweet Mandarin song about spring awakening. The celebration continued with mingling among staff members and guests, and concluded with photography sessions full of beaming smiles.

In the spirit of the Year of Rabbit, we at SJIS would like to wish everyone a year filled with peace and good health!
